This Week at the Hideout!

Hello friends!
Here’s what we have cooking this week!
Tonight we have Paul K, Rick Rizzo and Mark Rogers & Mary Byrne. Paul Kopasz retired his legendary rotating member trios and ensembles collectively known as The Weathermen in the summer of 2010 after 25 years and some 50 full-length releases. The project began as art-damaged punk in 1985 and eventually traversed every known american pop music genre: country, blues, jazz, folk, soul and experimental. A completely independent operation since 2000, Beacon Hill recordings and Farnsley Recordings put out Paul’s discs under his stage name Paul K and he continues to perform as a solo act and with small ensembles as time allows.  Rick Rizzo, founding member of Eleventh Dream Day opens along with Brooklyn duo Mark Rogers and Mary Byrnewho just released their debut album on Important Records earlier this month open.
Thursday, The Flat Five continues their Autumn Residency with their second show.  Going a little more quiet this time they present a softer set this evening.  They’ll be down on the floor with bongos and attempt audience requests and we’ll let you sit on the stage for a change!  This one’s going to be sweet folks, get your tickets nowas they are going fast!
Friday we have The Interview Show hosted by Mark Bazer.  The Interview Show, held the first Friday of every month at the Hideout, features guests from every walk of life — musicians, authors, comedians, community activists, chefs, CEOs, etc., both local and passing through town — sharing their world views and talents in a laid-back, intimate setting.  Tonight’s guests include singer/songwriter Kelly Hogan, Illinois State Senator DanielBiss, author of “The Opening Kickoff: The Tumultuous Birth of a Football Nation” Dave Revsine and TimBarnes, host of WBEZ’s All True podcast.
Later we have Lisa O’Neill.  Lisa O’Neill started writing songs and music at an early age in her native Ballyhaise, Co. Cavan, Ireland. She moved to Dublin, aged 18, to study music on a full time basis. Early on she was welcomed into the folk and traditional scene in pubs and venues around the city where her singular voice, witty lyrics and observations on modern Irish life gained her popularity and set her apart as a unique talent.  Lisa’s live performances are beguiling affairs full of banter and old-style folk intimacy.  Opening up is Homme, an experiment with voice, guitar and sound by Sima Cunningham and Marcie Stewart.
Saturday we have Dustin Wong and Takako Minekawa.  Dustin Wong and Takako Minekawa are artistic omnivores, soaking up a myriad of cultural artifacts and styles, savoring bits and pieces and reimagining them into entirely delightful and playfully intricate songs. The songs on their new album, Savage Imagination, are imbued with a relentless cheerfulness that belies their technicality. Good Willsmith and Jovantaes open.
Later, we have the two-year anniversary party of Malt Shop.  Spinning the best tracks of the 50s, 60s and 70s this dance party is always a blast and tonight should be a blow-out so get those dancing shoes on!
Sunday we have OpenICE at the Hideout | Credentials.  OpenICE is a free monthly series by the Illinois Humanities Council exploring the work of the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) in an unpretentious and intimate environment every second Sunday.  November’s lineup includes ICE’s newest member, saxophone legend Ryan Muncy alongside ICE founder and CEO Claire Chase and cellist Katinka Kleijn.  The concert will feature a world premiere by Jing Jing Luo, a rare work by James Tenney, recent works by Chicago-based composers David Reminick and Chris Fisher-Lochhead, and a piece by Pauline Oliveros.  John Von Rheinof the Chicago Tribune says about last month’s show that “A bunch of new music enthusiasts and the just-plain-curious crowded into the back room of Hideout on Sunday evening to catch the first of a free monthly series of concerts and conversations ICE is producing in partnership with the Illinois Humanities Council. I was glad to be among them.”
Monday, we have the legendary Robbie Fulks holding down the fort with Don Stiernberg.
Tuesday, we present CFA Crashers: Christen Carter.  Chicago Film Archives brought this series together to invite some of our favorite locals into our vault to curate a film program all their own (absolutely no rules or strings attached).  Christen Carter founded the Busy Beaver Button Company in 1995 after spending some time in England, where buttons (called “badges” over there) were still very popular. She moved back to the States and started making buttons for bands and record labels.
Later, we have the second night of John Hasbrouck’s month-long DREAM LUCKY record release party!  Tonight he presents The Pilsen Hot Six.  The Pilsen Hot Six is an acoustic string jazz combo that has emerged from the thriving jazz scene at Honky Tonk BBQ in Chicago. The band plays classic prohibition-era jazz and standards from the Great American Songbook.
