The Singer and The Song is a series that showcases the incredible songwriting talent of the Chicagoland music scene, with an emphasis on Country and Americana.

Each show features three full sets of music for dancing, drinking and listening, with the exciting bonus of a new song from each band, written from a word prompt given in advance.

The artists also pay tribute to Chicago’s music roots by covering a song by another Chicago artist, present or past.

The event is hosted by one of the show’s co-founders, Brandon Good, Lawrence Peters, or Matt Gandurski.

This month’s The Singer and the Song:

From the sun-drenched deserts of Tucson to the vibrant streets of Chicago, Lylah Elizabeth blends indie folk-rock with a touch of country, drawing inspiration from a vintage sounds that recalls the golden era of classic American. With a foundation in classical opera, her rich, emotive vocal soar over earthy acoustic melodies, telling intimate stories shaped by her travels and the cultures she’s encountered.

Coyote Riot is a group of friends hailing from the far Southwest side of Chicago playing a style of Americana music with hints of folk, bluegrass, rockabilly and more.  What began as hanging out, banging on some guitars and occasionally playing at local pubs back in 2012 has matured into a more developed sound being put on display on bigger stages around the Midwest and has culminated into the band’s first album release of original music titled “Burnt Along the Way.”

Lydia Cash grew up in Birmingham, Alabama. She moved to Chicago on a whim in 2013, and her love for the city has since become a wellspring of inspiration for her music.

Listening to Lydia Cash’s newest EP, “Blush,” feels almost like reading a secret– the five songs are beacons of authenticity where she reveals the innermost workings of her heart’s loves and losses. Each song is a unique confessional, a portrait of a moment in time, poured out of her like the best bottle of wine on a back porch. Heartache, new romance, and introspection are all common themes that are held together with threads of vulnerable moments– a shared cigarette, a head on a shoulder. Her delicate melodies, enrapturing voice, and a pedal steel twang showcase this native Alabamian/Chicago transplant’s dichotomy of grit and sweetness. So grab a glass, lean in, and let her stories find you, wherever you are.
