A Light Sleeper
Join us for the latest installment of a Light Sleeper’s “Somniloquy Sessions”, a unique series of matinee performances showcasing the stalwart ensemble’s delightfully confounding music. Comprised of Maria Elena Hernandez (alto and tenor saxophone), Matthew Jung (percussion and keyboard) and Dheeru Pennepalli (guitar), the nimble trio is branching out to incorporate storytelling and comedy into their already unpredictable sonic high-wire act. Inspired equally by Zach Galifianakis’ piano-tinged anti-humor, John Lurie’s Painting with John monologues, and various sci-fi/horror podcasts, the band endeavors to further engage (and/or confuse) audiences through a series of “somewhat true stories”, set to music.
Of course, the band will also be presenting musical selections from their latest album, Equaeverpoise (out now on Cuneiform Records). But a key aspect of these shows is improvisation, a skill the band has honed over much of the past two decades — resulting in a level of collective intuition that only comes with years upon years of really digging in, of truly getting to know and understand each other, as musicians and as people. These are the joyous sounds of very good friends having very deep (and very weird) conversations.
