Freak Heat Waves came back in 2023 with their fifth LP, Mondo Tempo, released under Vancouver’s Mood Hut label. The Montreal and Victoria based duo, composed of Steve Lind and Thomas Di Ninno, explored and indulged in dancehall grooves, ambient textures, trance mantras, and MIDI smoothness, and created an album that is a sophisticated blend of post-punk, psych, dub, ambient, house, and techno. The record and its lead single ‘In a Moment Divine’ were critical favourites featured on many year end lists including Resident Advisor, Crack Magazine and Gorilla vs. Bear.

The release of Mondo Tempo was supported by two North American tours in 2023, both co-headlined with frequent collaborator Cindy Lee. The Freaks toured again with Cindy in 2024 serving as openers on the Diamond Jubilee tour (an album co-produced by Freak Heat Waves’s Steve Lind). The duo finished off 2024 with an east coast tour opening for Homeshake, along with a string of their own headlining dates across the UK and EU.

With a new release on the horizon Freak Heat Waves will be back on tour with their Mood Hut label mate Jack J in spring 2025. Stay tuned.

Just a little over two years since the release of his debut album Opening the Door, Jack J re-emgerges with a new full length album. On Blue Desert, the Australian-born Vancouver-based multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter and producer wades deeper into the stylistically prismatic pool of his own creation: melancholy dub-funk, jangling psychedelia, moon-burnt sophisti-pop and stained glass folk mutations float freely together.

The Mood Hut Records founder and NTS host digs deeper in all the directions that he only brushed upon on Opening the Door, creating a kaleidoscopic index of his omnivorous listening habits: from Underworld to Kate Bush, Disco Inferno to Bryan Ferry, Julian Cope to Arthur Verocai. The LP will be released on Jack’s own Mood Hut Records on November 1st and will be followed by a live tour in the UK and Europe in November and December, featuring a string of dates opening for revered Los Angeles artist Jessica Pratt.
