Cult Canyon

Cult Canyon is the new project from Josh Chicoine (the M’s, Cloudbirds). Working with yet another stellar set of collaborators, Cult Canyon released it’s first EP, Golden Line, in November ‘24. The three songs on Golden Line revolve around Dave Max Crawford’s (Total Pro Horns) beautiful string arrangements and are a continuation of Josh’s work with acoustic guitar and Nick Drake-ian chamber pop influences.

For this show at the Hideout, Cult Canyon will be bringing that music to life with a string quartet, playing songs from Golden Line alongside songs from the next phase of songs from 2 releases coming in the Spring, and a proper 6-piece rock setup with more psyche-pop nods and art rock influences. But there is some Calexico and do-wop as well, so it’s hard to pin down.

NadNavillus

Equal parts guitar and vocal driven, sonically and structurally diverse, NadNavillus is the music of Dan Sullivan. A Chicago resident since the late 90s, Sullivan has recorded with Glen Hansard and Jason Molina, including on the latter’s seminal “Magnolia Electric Company”, as well as releasing 4 full-length LPs with long-running Art-Metal ensemble Arriver.

The latest NadNavillus album, “Forgotten Portraits” released in 2023, pairs Sullivan’s compositions with words sourced from Poetry Magazine’s February 2021 issue “The Practice of Freedom”, featuring poems by incarcerated people or those directly affected by incarceration. Anchored by Sullivan’s honest singing voice and impressive open-tuning electric fingerstyle guitar playing, the arrangements range from intimate to lush, with influences of African blues, out-jazz and Americana meeting under the umbrella of Indie-folk.

Two previous albums on Jagjaguwar, “Show Your Face” and “Iron Night” found receptive audiences in Europe, a new LP of instrumental material is ready for release in early 2025.
