Thursday we have Brokeback and Marisa Anderson. This is a fantastic double bill of some extraordinary musicians. Douglas McCombs’s goal for his longstanding Brokeback project has always been to do service to those fleeting moments in life when everything seems clear and defined and beautiful and the hair stands up on the back of your neck. Combining boundless creative imagination with a deep reverence for American folk, blues and country music, Marisa Anderson’s guitar playing is fluid, emotional, dexterous and original.
Friday, we premiere a new comedy show The 53rd Ward: After Dark. Fictional Alderman Ed Bus brings “53rd Ward: After Dark” to the Hideout. This part late-night talk show, part variety show, part community meeting is just what Chicago ordered. Featuring live music, sketches, interviews and shenanigans, the Alderman is back and stronger than ever.
Later, we have Lorelle Meets the Obsolete. Brewing a hot pot of shoegaze and Krautrock bubbled through a psych filter, the band knows how to ride the edge of groove and gently cut back to spacey atmospherics to superb effect. Chicago favorites onYou and Magic Castles open.
Saturday, we have a massive 4 band bill with North by North at the top. Influenced by the shadowy, dark pop majesty of Queens of the Stone Age and the downright possessed guitar work of Jack White, North by Northhave sweated it out in basements and clubs over the last four years. Also on the bill we have the rock n roll trioThe Holy Motors, Repblic of Lights and Tesla Rossa.
