This Week at the Hideout!

Tonight we have the final Soup and Bread of the season.  It’s that time of year again — time to celebrate the end of winter with, what else, pie! Tonight’s the final Soup & Bread of the 2014 soup season, and in addition to our usual slate of soups, organized this time around the theme of “the Fields,” we’re having a bake sale. Donations of pie and other baked goods are most welcome; all proceeds from the bake sale go to support the general operating expenses of Soup & Bread.  Come on out and support S&B and the NorthwesternSettlement House food pantry.
Later, Immediate Sound Series presents the record release party for the Chicago Underground Duo.  “For nearly a decade, starting in Mandarin Movie in the mid-aughts and continuing in Starlicker and Pulsar Quartet, cornetist Rob Mazurek has heaped his bands’ palettes with sound, creating motion and phantom overtones through accretion and volume. But he’s never really applied this approach to his longest-running group, the Chicago Underground Duo, even as its timbres have grown thicker and more electronic—not until now. On the new Locus (Northern Spy), recorded by John McEntire, Mazurek and percussionist Chad Taylor push deep into the red, driving out silence and negative space with a processed thicket of sound sources” – Peter Margasak – Chicago Reader
Thursday, we have a fantastic double bill of Dosh and Bitchin’ Bajas.  With the flash and efficiency of digital song-making technologies, it can be easy to lose sight of the merits of that which is analog. Martin Dosh, then, has become something of an accidental preservationist, keeping instruments like Rhodes keyboards and an ancient Korg EX 800 sequencer alive by using them in his innovative solo works and collaborations with the likes of Andrew Bird and Bonnie “Prince” Billy.  The Bitchin’ Bajas, side project of Cave’s Crain Cooper, opens.
Early Friday we have a special front room show with The Lantern Kickers.  The Lantern Kickers are an old-time band from Chicago who delve into the tradition and play the best of American string band music.
Later, we have Minutes.  Minutes began playing music in the summer of 2008. Composed of Chafe Hensley, Mark Larmee, Ryan Nelson, and Isaac Turner, all of whom are solidly “in their 30’s”, the band was started as an outlet for songs written by all members of the band. The modus operandi from day one was to enjoy the act of making music, create songs that are natural to their cumulative experiences, and to “serve the song.” Opening up is the one-man power band full of a muggy haze Axis:Sova and the debut of brand-new grunge band Stomatopod.
Saturday we have Marina Orchestra.  Marina Orchestra conveys the simple idea of bringing people together through music and dance. And without any underlying notion of irony or cynicism, you can feel good about what you’re letting loose to, so stop trying to fight it!  Opening up is Carpathian rock band Pet Peeve and Save the Clocktower.
Dance party is RETREAT, mixing the best of house, dance and top 40 tunes.  Get to dancing at midnight!
Sunday, Eleventh Dream Day continues its monthlong Residency joined this week by Jaye Jayle.  They have blown the roof of the place the past two weeks, not many more chances to check them out so come on out and see the new material they’ve been up to.
Monday, Robbie Fulks plays with the excellent Steve Dawson.
Tuesday, we have the hilarious God, Sex, Death Variety Hour, hosted by Danny Black.  Come here some sick stories and twisted stand-up sets.
Later on Tuesday we have Adam Busch continuing his Residency and playing with the great groupManishevitz.  Following their fantastic Halloween set here at the Hideout, we’re happy to this unconventional and brainy band back!  Opening up is the ethereal Bevel.
