Ghost Voice

Ghost Voice is a Chicago-based trio of pedal steel (Tom McGettrick), Wurlitzer 200 electric piano (Alison Hinderliter), and upright bass (Jeff Parker) playing a range of excerpts of “small-c” classical works, from Villa-Lobos' Bachianas 5 Aria to the Agnus Dei Aria in Bach's Mass in B minor.

Ghost Voice brings together instruments from the indie/rock/country worlds and points them in an unexpected direction, using the pedal steel as a foundational voice rather than as color or ambience, for example. Although the orchestration is unique, Ghost Voice is not merely experimental; rather, the combination of instruments has been carefully chosen to create a haunting new sound.

Like the instruments, the artists in Ghost Voice bridge musical worlds. Tom McGettrick also founded surfy-crime jazz instrumental band Mar Caribe and has performed with Lawrence Tome, Janet Bean, Sally Timms, Jon Langford and many other country/indie/folk/rock acts, as well as recently playing the pedal steel in Chicago Shakespeare Theater’s production of Brokeback Mountain. Alison Hinderliter (Scotland Yard Gospel Choir, The Handcuffs) and Jeff Parker (Joel Paterson, Paul Asaro, Natalie Scharf, Erwin Helfler, Chicago Cellar Boys), are both classically trained and have extensive experience in rock, indie, and jazz bands, so they are able to give these works the precise playing they deserve, while retaining the popular touch that the audience deserves.

Janet Bean

Janet Beveridge Bean brings to the Hideout her solo project, The Concertina Wire, for a rare live performance. Bean, as described by the Mekon’s Sally Timms, conjures dark psychological dramas in her songs. She uses her striking voice and presence to create a world of beauty and unease the listener will not soon forget. Bean is co-founder, co-songwriter, drummer, and vocalist for the great, muscular Chicago guitar band eleventh dream day. She is also co-founder, co-writer, and guitarist for the off-kilter-beautiful Freakwater, her country-folk group with Catherine Irwin. She’s performed and released albums with Jim Elkington as the Horses Ha and Jaime Fennelly’s Mind Over Mirrors, as well as her prison-bound, infamous dadist revolutionary duo, Moxie Tung, with Sally Timms.
