On June 24th, 2010, Fred Anderson passed away. Fred was a great jazz musician and a great friend of The Hideout who played many Immediate Sound Series shows here. We’ll truly miss his musical talents and especially his wonderful smile.
The Immediate Sound Series show on Wednesday, July 14th was christened “Reflections on Baba Fred Anderson” in his honor, and featured “a stellar quartet of his collaborators” including drummer Hamid Drake, guitarist Jeff Parker, bassist Josh Abrams, and trombonist Jeb Bishop. In lieu of flowers, Anderson’s family has requested donations to support and ensure continued operation of the Velvet Lounge. The Velvet (currently located at 67 E. Cermak) had been Anderson’s base of operations since 1982. As a home for creative music and new improvisation, and also a showcase for the younger musicians who will maintain Anderson’s legacy, it remains a vital venue in the city’s artistic life.
